I still see John Stanley from Spaceboy around a lot with R Drake , but not so much Spaceboy Scott. I dunno if he’s even still in the area

I remember buying both the Essential Logic and Liliput compilation CDs there before I saw Mission of Burma at the TLA...perfect evening!

I've known John Stanley for a while from going to RD's events, but it took me forever to realize he was from Spaceboy!

@Mark - John Stanley used to do a DJ night with Jack Monaghan, who worked at Spaceboy, and my old neighbor Karen J back in the early 2000s. That was at La Tazza in Old City

Karen Jagelle managed Rob Mazurek who appeared on Doubleplusgood for a live set circa 2004 or so. 6 Degrees of Spaceboy! I could go on!

Spaceboy was my most frequent go-to, but I also went to AKA and Plastic Fantastic in Ardmore when I lived out there in the mid-90s for college. That big sloppy poodle in the store used to follow me around the whole time I shopped! Loved that dog

@Mark - I worked in a lot of independent bookstores and some record stores in the 90s and early 2000s. You can connect so many Philly bookstores and record stores in a million ways between shared bands and family members. It’s funny how many of these stores share family members! Like Russakoff’s Books on 10th & Pine - he was the dad of Molly Russakoff of Molly’s Books & Music in the Italian Market. His son owned Mostly Books on Bainbridge…

Molly Russakoff used to be married to my former boss Bob Dickey of The Strapping Fieldhands, who owned 9th Street Books & Music. And of course bob was in a band with Jacy from Philadelphia Record Exchange. Etc etc etc etc etc!

A lot of these are ripped from CDs of mine, new stuff is mostly bought from Bandcamp or from a download code...as for the really obscure stuff, there are folks who have made it their life's mission to rip and make that stuff available online

Had a coupla friends in the Dumpsta Players who always performed at Bob & Barbara’s - Ricky and Sara Sherr, who booked me as DJ for a number of Sugartown gigs including at Tritone

@mark - oh god. I doubt it. I saw it once while drunk 25 years ago. I remember liking Citizen Toxie better! My friend desperately wanted to design set pieces and costumes for Lloyd Kaufman and got an appointment to meet him and I went with. The job didn’t work out, but it was a weird day!

That friend now makes puppets and costumes for Brian and Lisa Henson instead!

@Dana - George made those lobestub vids back in the early 2000s and these Shend vids were from later, but I couldn’t believe the similarities in their humor and execution. The Shend joked about collaborating but I doubt that’ll happen! We did meet up with the trilobite expert George sampled on an album while we were in London in 2008 so you never know!

And Alexis, who later opened Bindlestiff Books in West Philly, helped me and my friends try to unionize Barbara’s Bestsellers at the airport with the IWW! 😆 Alexis and John were great

@jimbeaux - I worked in that Borders, Bookline Intl on Pine, Atlantic Books in S Jersey, The Owl in Bryn Mawr, Barbara’s Bestsellers (terminal B-C of the accursed airport!) & also staffed The Wooden Shoe. Of all the bookstores, one had just had the tail end of a unionization effort when I started (walnut st borders) and one (Barbara’s) my friends & I tried to unionize w/ IWW with John & Alexis’ help, and then most of us got arrested in the 2000 RNC protests & subsequently fired for missed work

@Mark, bought the 2004 reissue on vinyl when it came out, hyped at the time! That track is also one of the Soul Jazz Punk 45 comps

@Mark - yes! and they also sell some small amount of music. I actually got that Ellipsis Arts’ comp with booklet Gravikords, Whirlies & Pyrophones which Ive played on ++good a bunch at Bindlestiff. Same label who put out that Ohm- early electronic music comp that’s also solid

@mark - and not only that, Bindlestiff had a buncha copies of that and they were only $5! This was quite a while back, like 2004?
