My EnterWebs is making me extra BoNkErS
Liz Bot 8:34:38 PM
That was me last night, @dana k. Bought tickets to black midi with Nnamdï at Union transfer a month ago when I was feeling socialable and optimistic. Show was last night and I just couldn’t bring myself to go. Also, that’s a big venue for a masks optional situation
Dana K (host) 8:35:31 PM
Ack! That was me with Yard Act last week, the fact that it was near sold out made me even more spooked
TAndy 8:35:40 PM
Pandemic or not, masks are smart. 1. They can look badass depending on the show... 2. People be nasty
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 8:36:20 PM
What happens to the spent money?? Take the loss??
Dana K (host) 8:36:26 PM
There's no way I'm missing EXTC (XTC "cover band" with their original drummer) at City Winery on Wednesday though.
mark 8:36:35 PM

Liz Bot 8:51:44 PM
@DanaK - I did the same thing with Yard Act. Argh.
Liz Bot 8:52:16 PM
@DanaK- the mood you’re in when you buy the tickets vs the mood you’re in when the show is upon you = not often the same!
Liz Bot 8:52:25 PM
(At least for me)
Dana K (host) 8:53:07 PM

Liz Bot 9:05:12 PM
R.I.P. Spaceboy . I bought that Homosexuals CD there too. I spent half my pay there every weekend for a good chunk of my 20s
Liz Bot 9:06:47 PM
I still see John Stanley from Spaceboy around a lot with R Drake , but not so much Spaceboy Scott. I dunno if he’s even still in the area
Dana K (host) 9:06:52 PM
I remember buying both the Essential Logic and Liliput compilation CDs there before I saw Mission of Burma at the TLA...perfect evening!
Dana K (host) 9:07:30 PM
I've known John Stanley for a while from going to RD's events, but it took me forever to realize he was from Spaceboy!
Liz Bot 9:07:57 PM
Nice! I saw Mission of Burma the Siren Fest on Coney Island in 04
Liz Bot 9:09:25 PM
I knew John Stanley through Spaceboy for a long time before he was with Robert Drake. He was with Scott with I spent all my $ in that store! He’s from a tiny town in Maine that my fam happened to camp in every summer for years
Dana K (host) 9:09:38 PM
Cool!
Liz Bot 9:10:22 PM
*replace the “with” after “Scott” with “when”!
mark 9:10:59 PM
john stanley has pretty good weekly segment spotlight obscure records
Ossy Hyouka 9:12:14 PM
Heya, Liz!
Liz Bot 9:12:36 PM
I separately used to see R D at his events. Went to Sex Dwarf and Fast, Cheap a lot back then. And Ulana’s nearby which had cheap shitty beer and goth nights my friend always wanted me to go to with him. I wonder what’s even where Ulana’s was now… 🤔
Liz Bot 9:12:42 PM
Hi Ossy!
Liz Bot 9:14:07 PM
@Mark - John Stanley used to do a DJ night with Jack Monaghan, who worked at Spaceboy, and my old neighbor Karen J back in the early 2000s. That was at La Tazza in Old City
Liz Bot 9:15:32 PM
Karen Jagelle managed Rob Mazurek who appeared on Doubleplusgood for a live set circa 2004 or so. 6 Degrees of Spaceboy! I could go on!
mark 9:16:30 PM
yeah i do catch his john dollar bin seg he plays some interesting bargain stuff
Liz Bot 9:17:05 PM
Haha!
mark 9:17:06 PM
& you mean 6 degree of ++ good :)
mark 9:18:21 PM
@dana no LOTL competition tonite only ncaa championship
Liz Bot 9:18:58 PM
@Mark- I still have so many free/dirt cheap sampler CDs from Spaceboy from 20+ years ago. Spaceboy was my most frequent go-to, but I also went to AKA and Plastic Fantastic in Ardmore when I lived out there in the mid-90s for college. That big sloppy poodle in the store used to follow me around the whole time I shopped! Loved that dog
mark 9:20:07 PM
haha like tommy wisau would say: hi doggy :)
Rachel Milligan 9:22:18 PM
hey y’all
Dana K (host) 9:22:37 PM
hi rachel, thanks for listening tonight!
Dana K (host) 9:23:19 PM
spaceboy was one of my main spots for CDs when i first started getting into stuff like this in my early teens. the other spot was sound of market on 11th and market, way up on the third floor
Rachel Milligan 9:23:32 PM
loving the tunes!!
Liz Bot 9:24:31 PM
Hi Rachel! Tell Dylan Hattie is psyched to do the video!
Liz Bot 9:25:01 PM
@Dana - I loved Sound of Market!
Dana K (host) 9:26:04 PM
me too! they looked so unassuming from the outside, but they had crazy stuff there
Liz Bot 9:26:42 PM
@Mark - I worked in a lot of independent bookstores and some record stores in the 90s and early 2000s. You can connect so many Philly bookstores and record stores in a million ways between shared bands and family members. It’s funny how many of these stores share family members! Like Russakoff’s Books on 10th & Pine - he was the dad of Molly Russakoff of Molly’s Books & Music in the Italian Market. His son owned Mostly Books on Bainbridge…
Liz Bot 9:27:47 PM
Molly Russakoff used to be married to my former boss Bob Dickey of The Strapping Fieldhands, who owned 9th Street Books & Music. And of course bob was in a band with Jacy from Philadelphia Record Exchange. Etc etc etc etc etc!
Rachel Milligan 9:28:22 PM
@liz ahhhh that’s so awesome! will tell him, he’s hard at work in the basement probably on something horrifying :)
Liz Bot 9:29:21 PM
And the OTHER Russakoff son owned Rustic Music!
mark 9:29:26 PM
yeah unfortunately such a tough biz these days i want to check out the new lot49 store - also a great name from the novella
Dana K (host) 9:29:33 PM
excited to hear that strapping fieldhands are playing their first show since 2015 this summer!
Liz Bot 9:30:14 PM
@Rachel - 😆 His chocolate oozing hedgehog cake still haunts me, and exploding toilet! Good stuff! Hattie is trying to recruit a friend to join her on the shoot
mark 9:31:13 PM
@liz the source of ++ good voluminous book, film & record knowledge:)
Liz Bot 9:31:41 PM
@Dana K - I still play The Fieldhand’s In the Pineys EP whilst driving through the Pineys 🌲
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 9:34:05 PM
Still here! Luvin it!
Liz Bot 9:34:10 PM
@mark - haha, I have many stories.
Liz Bot 9:35:11 PM
God good, I haven’t been to Tattooed Mom’s in so very long, but I had an intense phase of hanging out at that place a looooong time ago.
Dana K (host) 9:35:57 PM
I had a friend in from out of town who likes kitschy bars!
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 9:36:13 PM
DJ Dana K, are you playing physical media? CDs 💿 and vinyl 🧿 (special edition blue vinyl) ??
Dana K (host) 9:36:35 PM
heh, i wish! my home setup is MP3s only.
Liz Bot 9:36:39 PM
@Dana K- my friend Carey and I marked up many a Tattooed Mom’s stall with sharpies
Rachel Milligan 9:36:42 PM
haven’t been inside tmoms in quite a bit but have spent many nights there in a bumper car at a poetry reading
Rachel Milligan 9:37:13 PM
also they make the best vegan chicken sandwich!
Dana K (host) 9:37:42 PM
the vegan pickle chicken sandwich is indeed amazing
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 9:38:42 PM
So many are listed as 7” or 45s and from 1970s and stuff I’m surprised would have a digital file available. Did you make the mp3s?
Liz Bot 9:40:19 PM
Also used to go to Sugar Mom’s a lot. RIP Sugar Mom’s. A friend once put It’s a Shame About Ray on the jukebox there an obnoxious # of times
Dana K (host) 9:40:51 PM
A lot of these are ripped from CDs of mine, new stuff is mostly bought from Bandcamp or from a download code...as for the really obscure stuff, there are folks who have made it their life's mission to rip and make that stuff available online
mark 9:40:58 PM
i can’t picture DBTF as anything but vinyl :)
Dana K (host) 9:41:04 PM
oh, i really liked Sugar Mom's!
Rachel Milligan 9:41:19 PM
RIP sugarmom’s where i spent my 21st birthday lol
Dana K (host) 9:41:43 PM
i played a lot of vinyl when we had studio access :(
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 9:41:47 PM

i also took my buddy to dirty frank's while he was here
jimbeaux 9:46:35 PM
Let's hear it for Bob & Barbara's (bar) featuring Nate Wiley & the Crowd Pleasers!
Colin 9:47:01 PM
fun colin fact! my mom and dad first hooked up after a night out at dirty franks.
Liz Bot 9:47:15 PM
@Dana K - I preferred McGlinchey’s, with its cheap pitchers and Pac-Man table, plus it was just around the corner from my studio apartment in my 20s, but also hit up Dirty Frank’s and man, I will never forget when the lights went up in that place the second the bartenders wanted to leave
Liz Bot 9:47:47 PM
@colin - haha, prob true of a lot of Philly parents!
Colin 9:48:16 PM
JIm, I spent many a night with the crowd pleasers. bob and barbers would serve minors and i lived in the hood my freshman year of college.
Rachel Milligan 9:48:17 PM

bob & barbara originated city wide shot & beer special
Liz Bot 9:50:07 PM
@jimbeaux - Hi! I LOVED bob & Barbara’s and Tritone! I lived on 16th Spruce in a studio for most of my 20s, so a hop and skip from both bars (RIP Rick D). Had a coupla friends in the Dumpsta Players who always performed at Bob & Barbara’s - Ricky and Sara Sherr, who booked me as DJ for a number of Sugartown gigs including at Tritone
Liz Bot 9:50:28 PM
@Mark - Pabst and Jim beam
Dana K (host) 9:50:39 PM
@mark, my friend actually asked where the citywide originated and i didn't know - now i have to update him
Colin 9:51:29 PM
liz, McGlinchey's circa 93? $5 pitchers of porter and 32 of your friends crammed into those tiny booths. each with a glass.
mark 9:51:39 PM
haha only became clued to that term recently
Liz Bot 9:52:42 PM
@jimbeaux - I don’t know if I can muster all the backstory, but one night my friend and I ended up drinking at Bob & Barbara’a with Sergeant Kabuki Man, NYPD from the Troma film, and he got rowdy “checking our drinks for anthrax”…yes, it was during that anthrax scare in 2001, broke a lamp and got kicked out of the bar
Dana K (host) 9:53:04 PM

haha lizbot maybe tell the story on mic some nite !
Liz Bot 9:55:13 PM
@mark - I’ll have to! I’d talk all night!
jimbeaux 9:55:21 PM
Wait...i worked at borders on walnut!
Colin 9:55:53 PM
absolutely remember bernadette! there were some after the car closed adventures with bernadette. don't remember those too well lol
mark 9:58:10 PM
@liz that particular troma film worth watching?
Liz Bot 9:58:47 PM
@colin - haha, l bet. Everyone I worked with at the bookstore worked 2-3 jobs, including at bars nearby
Colin 9:58:51 PM
did lizbot, jim and i all live within a few blocks of each other way back when? I sure applied for a job at the borders on walnut. never got it..
Colin 9:59:21 PM
i delivered pizzas for uno on locust.
jimbeaux 10:00:02 PM
I worked there 92-99ish...
Liz Bot 10:00:20 PM
@mark - oh god. I doubt it. I saw it once while drunk 25 years ago. I remember liking Citizen Toxie better! My friend desperately wanted to design set pieces and costumes for Lloyd Kaufman and got an appointment to meet him and I went with. The job didn’t work out, but it was a weird day!
Liz Bot 10:01:01 PM
That friend now makes puppets and costumes for Brian and Lisa Henson instead!
Colin 10:01:10 PM
btw, our dj has been killing it!
Liz Bot 10:02:01 PM
@jimbeaux - where? Uno?
Rachel Milligan 10:02:10 PM
@liz never ceases to astound me how many puppet people there are in the world
Liz Bot 10:02:32 PM
@Colin - 🤔 quite possible. I lived on the first floor front of 309 S 16th back then.
Colin 10:03:17 PM
jim, i wouldn't be surprised it you tailed me around the borders totally sus of me shoplifting.
jimbeaux 10:03:57 PM
At borders Lizbot!
Colin 10:05:32 PM
I've told students of mine that if they learned drums and wires on any instrument they would come out of it a better musician.
Liz Bot 10:05:32 PM
@Rachel - I know, right? This was a friend who made b -horror movies too and used to screen them at the little Shubin Theatre in Queen Village. I played an anarchy phone in one called HypnoThriller and my soap-operatic character name was “Leanne Somerton” 😂
mark 10:05:39 PM
borders shoplifting reminds me of uncle leo ep where he got caught
Rachel Milligan 10:06:37 PM
@liz leanne somerton! incredible
Colin 10:06:53 PM
i lived at 12th and spruce from 93 to 96. had an apt above wok n tofu then a house on fawn st.
Liz Bot 10:07:04 PM
@jimbeaux - ack! I started that Borders in ‘99! I wonder if we overlapped? I was mostly registers. Did you know that Irish guy Thom? There were two Steves, and I think Melissa. And the guy who also taught philosophy at CCP
mark 10:07:23 PM
@lizbot so we’ll find you on imdb :)
Colin 10:08:21 PM
love rock n roll saxophone.
Liz Bot 10:08:28 PM
@colin - oh my god yeah you were so close by!
Ossy Hyouka 10:08:46 PM
Yeah
jimbeaux 10:09:14 PM
2 or 3 steves, definitely! A lot of people were involved in Big Mess Theater/cabaret.
Commie Francis 10:09:46 PM
OH MY GOD
Ossy Hyouka 10:09:46 PM
For a sec, I got confused with rnb singer and actress, Brandy Norwood(cousin of Snoop Dogg)
Dana K (host) 10:10:16 PM
Haha, understandable, this Brandy is a band from New York
Ossy Hyouka 10:11:06 PM
Awesome too!
Ossy Hyouka 10:11:28 PM
Hi Commie!
Liz Bot 10:11:58 PM
@Dana K - Cravats!!! I told George some oddball videos he made under the name lobestub reminded me of these videos The Shend from The Cravats made in the doc Life In a Day and George got in touch with The Shend and had an email exchange and he watched G’s vids and agreed they were in the same vein. This was like a year ago
Liz Bot 10:12:21 PM
Hi Commie!
Dana K (host) 10:12:46 PM
I can see George and The Shend getting along!
jimbeaux 10:13:07 PM
It COMMMMMIIIEEE!
Commie Francis 10:13:18 PM
Hi Liz hi past hi Dana hi Jimbo hi etc
Dana K (host) 10:13:30 PM
commieeeeeee
Commie Francis 10:13:53 PM
By past i mean ossy
Liz Bot 10:14:15 PM
@jimbeaux - I remember there were enough Steves that we needed to distinguish them by their surname initials! And then there was one Stephen and he was dating another guy who worked at the store. I worked there on Y2K morning! Were you there??! Some drunk woman smashed the glass door of the IHOP across the street while we waited for the manager to show up with the key to open up the borders!
mark 10:14:24 PM
@lizbot did you get to meet kaufman ?he’s an interesting character
Liz Bot 10:16:05 PM
@Dana K - yeah, it was UNcanny! If you ever see G’s lobestub madrid and then you watch the vids The Shend made for Life In a Day; they are like conceptual brothers! Shend was
Liz Bot 10:17:23 PM
@Mark - Yes, met Lloyd. He also came to Philly and had an event at the Locust st TLA and brought some of the Troma actors, which is how I ended up at Bob & Barbara’s with Sergeant Kabuki Man
mark 10:18:41 PM
more 6 degree of ++ good !
Dana K (host) 10:18:52 PM
I have a friend I've known since high school who's been in all the Troma movies over the last decade or so. Lloyd is basically a father figure to him.
Commie Francis 10:18:54 PM
Sleigh bells!
jimbeaux 10:19:40 PM
Liz, i must have left by then!
Liz Bot 10:20:00 PM
@Dana - George made those lobestub vids back in the early 2000s and these Shend vids were from later, but I couldn’t believe the similarities in their humor and execution. The Shend joked about collaborating but I doubt that’ll happen! We did meet up with the trilobite expert George sampled on an album while we were in London in 2008 so you never know!
Liz Bot 10:20:42 PM
@Dana K - My friend Miker the puppeteer / industrial designer guy would probably love your friend
Liz Bot 10:21:08 PM
@jimbeaux! I can’t believe it! I don’t remember a Jim there but it sounds like we just missed each other!
Liz Bot 10:21:50 PM
@jimbeaux - we def worked with a lot of the same ppl
mark 10:22:28 PM
half time in b-ball game nc up big (if anyone cares)
Rachel Milligan 10:23:24 PM
@liz i told dylan your kabukiman story and he was “not at all surprised” lmao! also apparently kabukiman the film features a car flip that was so expensive lloyd kaufman has used the same clip in every trina film produced since
Rachel Milligan 10:23:55 PM
*troma
Liz Bot 10:24:31 PM
@jimbeaux- We were posting Ingram anti-trust flyers and talking about unionizing that Borders. A few ppl got in trouble when management found out. And Alexis, who later opened Bindlestiff Books in West Philly, helped me and my friends try to unionize Barbara’s Bestsellers at the airport with the IWW! 😆 Alexis and John were great
Rachel Milligan 10:24:42 PM
@mark if nc wins i come in second in my work pool!
Liz Bot 10:25:39 PM
@rachel - haha! Figures! Yeah, I think my friend and I only got to drink maybe a third of our drinks before Kabuki man “sampled” them
Colin 10:25:55 PM
love how this part 2 of the song. I need to know part 1!!!!
Dana K (host) 10:26:10 PM
the whole simply saucer record is FAB
jimbeaux 10:26:35 PM
Liz, there was a IWW union drive when i was there...michael moore came to the store in support.
Colin 10:26:49 PM

mark 10:26:50 PM
haha citywides on rachel- for the dbtfers only !
Liz Bot 10:27:18 PM
@jimbeaux - Yes! That was still happening when I started there, though management fired a few ppl for talking union
mark 10:29:05 PM
@libot bindlestiff is the store on Baltimore?
Rachel Milligan 10:29:50 PM
@mark 😂
jimbeaux 10:30:58 PM
Yes, i witnessed the corporate sleaze tactics. I was a cafe/book mgr at the time, so was in a weird position
mark 10:31:44 PM
Dana where in world did you find the last one ?!!
Liz Bot 10:32:08 PM
@jimbeaux - I worked in that Borders, Bookline Intl on Pine, Atlantic Books in S Jersey, The Owl in Bryn Mawr, Barbara’s Bestsellers (terminal B-C of the accursed airport!) & also staffed The Wooden Shoe. Of all the bookstores, one had just had the tail end of a unionization effort when I started (walnut st borders) and one (Barbara’s) my friends & I tried to unionize w/ IWW with John & Alexis’ help, and then most of us got arrested in the 2000 RNC protests & subsequently fired for missed work
Liz Bot 10:33:50 PM
@jimbeaux - I drank so much discounted tazo tea in that cafe during my breaks. I can’t see tazo without thinking about that place
Dana K (host) 10:34:39 PM
@Mark, bought the 2004 reissue on vinyl when it came out, hyped at the time! That track is also one of the Soul Jazz Punk 45 comps
mark 10:35:29 PM
starbucks became first nyc store to unionize today
Liz Bot 10:36:19 PM
@Mark - yes! and they also sell some small amount of music. I actually got that Ellipsis Arts’ comp with booklet Gravikords, Whirlies & Pyrophones which Ive played on ++good a bunch at Bindlestiff. Same label who put out that Ohm- early electronic music comp that’s also solid
Liz Bot 10:37:07 PM
@mark - and not only that, Bindlestiff had a buncha copies of that and they were only $5! This was quite a while back, like 2004?
mark 10:37:11 PM
gotta love the hamilton ontario punk/psych scene that was a great find
Liz Bot 10:37:53 PM
@mark - was just reading about that the other day (unionized Starbucks)
mark 10:38:54 PM
@lizbot i bought books there at last year’s porch fest real great prices
Liz Bot 10:39:41 PM
@rachel - Kabukiman is forever banned from Bob & Barbara’s 😂 He just had to get up on stage and then fall all over the place
Liz Bot 10:40:35 PM
@mark - was just thinking 🤔, porchfest isn’t long off. I also got to the collingswood one last year
Liz Bot 10:41:27 PM
@Dana K - speaking of early-mid 2000s comps- Soul Jazz 🥰
