I was so hoping we would hear this as soon as you said Exuma!
Brian D 5:05:01 PM
The Voodoo Chile song of Bahamas kinda
Lizbot (host) 5:05:21 PM
Thanks, Christine! Yeah, I am already having microphone connectivity issues, so we'll see how that goes, BUT I have sooooo much Bahamian music to play today - Junkanoo, rake & scrape, goombay, plus calypso.
Lizbot (host) 5:05:27 PM
Lizbot (host) 5:06:17 PM
This guy ruled. He was actually from Cat Island, which is even tinier than Exuma, and he was a practitioner of exuma witchdoctery
Lizbot (host) 5:06:32 PM
Sidney Poitier - ALSO from Cat Island in the Bahamas!
Christine πŸ¦‰ 5:07:24 PM
What an awesome kick-off! I want to hear all the Bahamian music. Do they have duppies or duppy folklore on Exuma? πŸ‘»πŸ˜ˆ one of the many things I loved about the Cayman Islands were the duppy tales.
Brian D 5:08:32 PM
7th Son, Voodoo Child, Obeah Man, Mannish Boy, Boogie Chillen.... love all those grand self creation stories in song throughout the years.

Lizbot (host) 5:10:36 PM
@Christine - I didn't hear that term there, but our cabbie talked a lot about storytelling songs!
Lizbot (host) 5:11:14 PM
@Brian D - Smokey 007 is one I wanted but couldn't locate. A lot of funny stories in many of these songs!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:28 PM
First flight sine the pandemic began - not too bad! Ppl actually stayed masked and flights were short
mark 5:14:34 PM
hi lizbot welcome back & now @christine has me looking up duppy tales
Lizbot (host) 5:14:42 PM
@Christine - What did you think of the Best Animated Short Oscar winner?? I was flying home during the Ocars, but I looked up the winners and man, that was the ONLY short I truly hated!
Lizbot (host) 5:14:46 PM
Hello Mark!
Lizbot (host) 5:16:27 PM
haha, good! more Duppy tales!
Lizbot (host) 5:18:47 PM
I have to recommend Exuma over Nassau/Freeport/the more touristy islands! Exuma only has a population of about 7000 and a lot of the land is protected. It's surrounded by hundreds of little cays, some owned by celebrities, but the Bahamian government took Nicolas Cage's island back from him once they discovered a large wild iguana population on it! They bought it back from him and now it's protected. We visited the iguanas by boat one day
Christine πŸ¦‰ 5:19:17 PM
@Lizbot, when I read that Windshield Wiper won thr Oscar, I was in disbelief. The one short with the LEAST artistic merit! I found the style cool to look at, but the creators ripped off Richard Linklater, and the "story" went nowhere and was annoying. Ugh.
Christine πŸ¦‰ 5:20:20 PM
I thought Robin Robin was a shoe-in for its fuzzy, cute family-friendliness. I'm glad I don't bet! πŸ’Έ
Lizbot (host) 5:22:49 PM
@Christine - Exactly!! I was so pissed! I would have been happy with any of them winning over that clap-trap! It was so corny and unoriginal, and felt like it was just trying to elicit cheap tears. I wish Affairs Of The Art had won!
Lizbot (host) 5:23:36 PM
@Mark - I hadn't been to the Bahamas since 1986 when I went to Freeport with my family. I took one look at what Freeport and Nassau look like now and steered clear. All giant chain hotels and casinos
Jon Solomon 5:24:11 PM
Seriously, no Selecta Jerry in the chat yet?
Christine πŸ¦‰ 5:24:11 PM
I'm glad the iguanas have their island back and Nic Cage doesn't own it anymore.

@Rob - I saw some interesting birds in Exuma. I have yet to identify them. One very long-necked bird I got video and still photos of, plus a black bird with a strange call and long tail

What did you think of the Exuma food scene, Lizbot?
dan Cochrane 6:06:31 PM
I’ve only had it cold in salad. This bang bang song Jonathan Richman.
Lizbot (host) 6:07:19 PM
I am not a seafood person, alas, but my husband and daughter ate conch. Crack conch has more flavor. Conch fritters have so much breading you barely taste the conch, according to George. He also tried conch chowder.
Christine πŸ¦‰ 6:08:37 PM
I love some conch! πŸšπŸ’—
dan Cochrane 6:08:52 PM
Unconchanable…er, sorry. Someone had to say it.
Christine πŸ¦‰ 6:09:17 PM
@dan lol
dan Cochrane 6:10:07 PM
Christine, you’re easily amused…a good thing.
Lizbot (host) 6:10:26 PM
@Dan C /Christine - There is a guy on the beach near the Chat n' Chill bar on Stocking Island, (one of the little cays that's part of Exuma,) who has been making fresh conch salad outside right on the beach by the water for the past 20 years and dozens of wild stingrays hang out in the shallows right by his stand to eat the scraps he throws them!
Christine πŸ¦‰ 6:10:32 PM
@Addie, I looked up conch's eyes and WOW. 🧿🧿

talk of conch and junkanoo making me think of James Bond thunder ball which had scenes filmed in exuma
Lizbot (host) 6:13:25 PM
@Brian D - Ha! Fitting that our first flight trip since the pandemic was to Exuma and the last one before the pandemic was New Orleans during the beginning of Mardi Gras. All carnivals
Lizbot (host) 6:13:40 PM
@Mark - We snorkeled in Thunderball Grotto!
Brian D 6:13:51 PM
I've heard that Don't Touch Me Nylons song before by others. A common theme in Bahamian music
dan Cochrane 6:14:10 PM
Is there a hush puppy song? Side dish.
Lizbot (host) 6:14:19 PM
@Dan C / Mark - Britain still ran The Bahamas when Thunderball was filmed
dan Cochrane 6:14:55 PM

That sounds pretty ideal for a trip to the Bahamas, @lizbot
dan Cochrane 6:19:59 PM
Let’s not forget Dr. No.
Lizbot (host) 6:21:00 PM
@Dan C - I read an interview with the son of the guy who was Connery's stand-in scuba double in Thunderball. He was a brit who lived in the Bahamas. Typical Scot, can't swim! None of my Irish fam could swim either! Water too cold and rough in Ireland and Scotland. Irish Sea and North Atlantic aren't forgiving. That's why there are so many trad songs about drownings! Fisherman who can't swim !
dan Cochrane 6:22:30 PM
Lizbot (host) 6:22:53 PM
@Addie - definitely! Alternated: one day of lazing, one day of exploring/snorkeling/cay-hopping by boat
Christine πŸ¦‰ 6:24:06 PM
That sounds like a great schedule @Lizbot
Lizbot (host) 6:24:48 PM
I like this dude's band name! The Websites!
Lizbot (host) 6:26:15 PM
@Christine - For tropical places, I like to do that schedule, or go out every day very very early if I'm in an equatorial place, like when I was in Costa Rica - get up at 4 am, go birding from 5-10 am, get back by 11 am, eat lunch and nap when it gets extremely hot! Good thing the sun rises so early there!

Ossy Hyouka 6:40:29 PM
This talk of Magic Trip has me thinking of that classic gold series, Magic School Bus!
Addie Plum 🐍 6:41:04 PM
Awwww yisss, Ms. Frizzle was the best!
Addie Plum 🐍 6:41:56 PM
Can’t tell you how jealous I am about the stingrays!
Lizbot (host) 6:42:08 PM
@Ossy - That series was so fun! I loved reading the Magic Schoolbus with my kid!
Lizbot (host) 6:43:20 PM
@Ossy & Addie - I have a friend whose Halloween costume game is on point and she did a great Miss Frizzle costume one year! She's a teacher
Brian D 6:43:42 PM
That cling of the percussion is so great. Pulls me in
Addie Plum 🐍 6:43:45 PM
Can’t say I ever thought I’d hear a song about pigs vomiting.
Lizbot (host) 6:43:54 PM
@Addie - The stingrays were awesome! My husband compared them to unwrapped burritos
Ossy Hyouka 6:44:05 PM
I know Addie, Ms Frizzle so cute, full of energy and funny and Lizbot, been so long I seen that since the preschool days! Magic School Bus also brings me to Captain Planet with the 5 exact same kids of the same ethnicity!
Lizbot (host) 6:44:41 PM
@Addie - also, many wild iguanas, nurse sharks, sea turtles, sergeant major fish, angelfish, wild pigs
Ossy Hyouka 6:45:04 PM
Liz- Wow, even more cuter your friend was Frizzle for Halloween! I bet she won no doubt!
Addie Plum 🐍 6:45:59 PM
Music is really suiting the tropical temps of high 50s we’re having here in VT today!
Lizbot (host) 6:46:55 PM
in this song a conch shell is used as a weapon!
Lizbot (host) 6:47:57 PM
@addie - haha, downright tropical!
Ossy Hyouka 6:48:55 PM
especially with the rain and wind
Addie Plum 🐍 6:49:08 PM
Practically equatorial!
Lizbot (host) 6:50:11 PM
@Ossy - that was one of her more memorable costumes!
Lizbot (host) 6:50:41 PM
@Addie - haha, I'm glad the pigs I swam with didn't get up to any vomiting shenanigans
Christine πŸ¦‰ 6:50:57 PM
I bet a shard from a broken conch would be as sharp as a razor. That would be a wicked weapon!
Lizbot (host) 6:52:40 PM
@Addie - ha! It was 70 degrees when we left Philly in mid-March, and we came back to 30 degrees Sunday!
Ossy Hyouka 6:52:49 PM
Liz - Nice awesome! The past halloween I was a version of magic painter named Adeleine from Kirby 64. I also turned to a progressive employee with witch powers!
Lizbot (host) 6:52:53 PM
@Addie - but today is balmy
Lizbot (host) 6:55:15 PM
@Christine - conch could do some serious damage, broken or not!
Lizbot (host) 6:55:40 PM
@Ossy - That costume sounds awesome! I gotta look up Adeleine!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ 6:57:04 PM
Hi Lizbot, i just saw your bird sighting mentions from 75 minutes ago, sorry. If you want, you can DM me for my email address and send me the video & photos
Lizbot (host) 7:03:51 PM
Hi Rob! Yes, I think I'll do that! The black bird's call grabbed my attention. I recorded a bit before it flew away
Lizbot (host) 7:04:46 PM
@Rob - I can't DM from this Chat, but you're on my insta or twitter, so I'll send em layer
mark 7:05:31 PM
we’re all gonna have to rewatch thunder ball now the movie takes some criticism for overly long under water scenes
Lizbot (host) 7:08:29 PM
@Mark - Yes! I grew up with an older brother who lived for Bond movies and controlled what we rented on weekend nights when our parents would give us some money for the video store. Certain Bond movies (all Connery or Moore, we didn't mess with Lazenby, and Timothy Dalton hadn't come along yet, let along Pierce Brosnan,) I saw MANY times, but Thunderball was not one of our favorites
DSM 7:08:50 PM
Hey Lizbot! Not able to chat, but did want to say enjoying the vacation inspired selections and your tales of travel very much! Welcome back!
TAndy 7:10:56 PM
O hi, good evening everyone 😁
Lizbot (host) 7:11:10 PM
Hi DSM! Thanks for stopping by the chat! Glad you're enjoying!
Lizbot (host) 7:11:19 PM
Hi TAndy! Good evening!
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:11:46 PM
Oh this percussion πŸ’˜ Hi, TAndy & Hi DSM!
Lizbot (host) 7:12:18 PM
@Mark - I wasn't a big fan of the Thunderball remake, Never Say Never Again, either. Lots of diving in that one too! For an example of a Bond movie that got diving chases right, The Spy Who Loved Me is it!
Lizbot (host) 7:12:34 PM
@Christine - I love these Mustangs!
mark 7:14:03 PM
agreed on the non-Eon never say never, I gotta check if that was filmed in Bahamas too
Lizbot (host) 7:16:08 PM
@mark - Filmed in French Riviera & Nassau, Bahamas
mark 7:19:09 PM
yeah just saw that. lotta legal wrangling as to who held that rights to blofeld character
Lizbot (host) 7:20:54 PM
@Mark - I prefer Donald Pleasence's Blofeld to all other actors' portrayals. Gotta love his eye makeup and that white cat! I think Inspector Gadget kids cartoon show for the 80s stole the villain stroking a cat in a spinny chair from Blofeld!
Dennis Lingg 7:21:10 PM
Now I’m itchy.
Lizbot (host) 7:21:49 PM
@Dennis - you're gonna be singing to yourself "I gotta itch" over and over all night, sorry!
Dennis Lingg 7:22:06 PM
It’s true!
mark 7:22:07 PM
not to mention dr evils obv parallels :)
Lizbot (host) 7:22:08 PM
had to get in some steel drums
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:22:10 PM
Hooray for steel pans!
Lizbot (host) 7:22:19 PM
@Christine - indeed!
Addie Plum 🐍 7:22:37 PM
Steel drums are so dang jaunty
Lizbot (host) 7:23:15 PM
@mark - well I always took dr evil as blatant Bond villain parody, but Inspector Gadget's Dr. Claw wasn't so forthcoming!
Ossy Hyouka 7:23:37 PM
Indeed an island and traditional party vibe! Brings me to tbt many shows, Mike, Lu and Og!
TAndy 7:23:39 PM
Oh this rules
Lizbot (host) 7:24:03 PM
I saw some bonefish out on the boat near stocking cay!
Lizbot (host) 7:24:42 PM
@Ossy - glad to bring the party vibe to this Thursday night! Get ppl psyched for warmer weather hopefully soon
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:25:30 PM
@Addie you may like the new album from Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band. Dan Buskirk played a track on Monday. They're German and pretty funky.
Dennis Lingg 7:26:08 PM
Hey Lizbot, are these mostly records you got on the trip?
mark 7:27:35 PM
btw lizbot i saw nite of 1000 kates on you tube. some rather interesting performances! thanks for giving us the heads up on it
Lizbot (host) 7:28:14 PM
@Dennis - A bunch I found out about on the trip and got, some there, but mostly afterwards, and the Numero Group comp and the Duke of Iron records I already had
Lizbot (host) 7:29:02 PM
@Mark - I was so bummed Night of a 1000 Kates was during my trip this year, but I live-streamed it from Exuma! Cost me some extra data charges! Worth it!
Addie Plum 🐍 7:29:04 PM
My goodness! This song is making me blush
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:29:11 PM
"With and Without Social Significance" is interesting.
Addie Plum 🐍 7:29:51 PM
Thanks Christine, I’ll check that out!
mark 7:31:13 PM
ha i figured you streamed. you should have told them where you were watching they announced a lot of exotic locations
Dennis Lingg 7:31:45 PM
@Liz your post trip shows are so fun!
Lizbot (host) 7:34:29 PM
@Dennis - Thanks! Yeah, I love doing them! I always hear such great stuff on trips and I always ask people what they listen to - the modern stuff and the classics
Rob from Maryland 🌻 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ 7:34:38 PM
Thanks, Lizbot! (I'm on your twitter tbh)
Lizbot (host) 7:34:38 PM
@Addie - ha!
Ossy Hyouka 7:34:50 PM
Ikr? Inadvertently made me remember throw back tropical shows like Mike Lu Og and Brandy and Mr. Whiskers!
Lizbot (host) 7:34:52 PM
@Christine - Yeah, that album title cracks me up
Diana 7:35:49 PM
Lizbot (host) 7:36:13 PM
@Ossy - Oh wow! I vaguely remember Brandy and Mr. Whiskers!
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:36:27 PM
These hamonies 😍
Lizbot (host) 7:37:21 PM
@Diana - come back!
Ossy Hyouka 7:37:46 PM
Been so long i've seen both shows, I fondly remember Brandy(Kaley Cuoco) but MLO on Cartoon Network is so forgotten!
Diana 7:38:04 PM
Lizbot (host) 7:41:04 PM
This song is gonna make me itch
Lizbot (host) 7:41:42 PM
@Ossy - They were after my time, and before I had a kid, so I was only vaguely aware of them, but still checked out Cartoon Network periodically. Have a friend who storyboarded for some Carton Network shows in the mid-late 2000s/early 2010s, mainly Adventure Time
Lizbot (host) 7:43:00 PM
bedbug, like, ask first
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:44:17 PM
Right? Consent!
Lizbot (host) 7:44:18 PM
oh no! only 15 minutes left!
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:44:26 PM
Addie Plum 🐍 7:44:47 PM
Oh noooooo
JimmyCarter IsMy Hero 7:44:58 PM
Thanks for a great afternoon!
Addie Plum 🐍 7:45:06 PM
I love that this singer also went by Dry Bread!
Ossy Hyouka 7:45:39 PM
Oh I see, Liz, But never too late to still check them out and awesome that your friend worked for CN!
Lizbot (host) 7:47:27 PM
@Addie - for real! great name!
Lizbot (host) 7:47:51 PM
@Ossy - I love Cartoon Network! I will visit those shows with my kid, or without!
Lizbot (host) 7:48:06 PM
Hi JimmyCarter IsMy Hero! Thanks for listening!
Ossy Hyouka 7:48:33 PM
And Nickolodeon and Disney!
jimbeaux 7:49:20 PM

Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:49:55 PM

jimbeaux 7:52:39 PM
L'eau du robo
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:53:55 PM
I had so much fun Goombay bumpin', rake & scraping, and Junkanooing these past three hours. πŸ‡§πŸ‡Έ πŸ”‹πŸ’― This energy is off the charts. Thank you, Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 7:54:46 PM
thanks, Christine!
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:55:34 PM
Such awesome sounds of the Caribbean, with and without social significance!
Addie Plum 🐍 7:56:04 PM
Super fun show tonight Lizbot! A glorious return!
TAndy 7:56:33 PM
Thanks for the show tonight Lizbot, I appreciated waking up to some high positive energy 😎
Ossy Hyouka 7:56:49 PM
IKR!? An island festive and fiesta Caribbean party last moments!
mark 7:56:52 PM
thanks for the tropical sounds & even avoided the Bahamian’s baha men :)
JimmyCarter IsMy Hero 7:58:00 PM
Continuing the theme, I love the Jamaican band, Jolly Boys.
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:58:05 PM
We're happier than a stingray full of conch scraps
TAndy 7:58:05 PM
[Bahamian wailing as the show ends already] :(
Addie Plum 🐍 7:58:19 PM
Nice one, Christine!
Ossy Hyouka 7:58:34 PM
Got me playing Mike, Lu and Og along with this! :D
Lizbot (host) 7:58:34 PM
@Mark - haha, I try! I remember the baha men, but yeah, nah!
Lizbot (host) 7:58:54 PM
@Ossy- Nice! Good upbeat sounds to accompany it!
Christine πŸ¦‰ 7:59:22 PM
Dennis coined that phrase...props to Dennis!
Lizbot (host) 7:59:47 PM
Good on Dennis!
