Good morning, and welcome to Sangeet.
TAndy 9:02:15 AM
Good morning Sangeet!Dave! Always love hearing the enthusiasm from each DJ in that ID for this program :)
Sangeet Team (host) 9:02:58 AM
Thanks, TAndy. That's something we put together during last year's fundraising drive.
TAndy 9:10:30 AM
I like it! I'll likely be tuned in for the next hour or so then falling asleep, busy night at work earlier. Keeping my radio locked however >:)
MusicChallenged 9:12:36 AM
Hi Dave and TAndy
Sangeet Team (host) 9:13:58 AM
Good morning, MusicChallenged.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:14:11 AM
Sleep well, TAndy.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:18:08 AM
I love the way Nikhil Banerjee explores the lower register of the sitar. Almost like a surbahar.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:21:33 AM
And that is something most sitarists don't bother with.
MusicChallenged 9:23:59 AM
So nice and so true about the low register observation you make.
TAndy 9:26:32 AM
This sitar piece is just too enchanting...
Sangeet Team (host) 9:30:21 AM
I tell you, Nikhil Banerjee is my favorite. Consistently superb.
MusicChallenged 9:32:41 AM
Maybe I am way too old fashioned, but I like to hear just the instruments without all the "electronic effects" that can added by sound systems...
Sangeet Team (host) 9:36:31 AM
Nothing wrong with that preference.
PADMA GANESH 9:43:48 AM
Good morning to all!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:44:39 AM
Good morning, Padma.
PADMA GANESH 9:46:08 AM
@Dave you do have an enviable 60s collection!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:48:27 AM
Well, my collection is at the point of being ridiculous.
Christine 🦉 9:51:01 AM
Good morning Sangeet, Dave, Padma, Music Challenged, TAndy! ☕ Hope everyone is enjoying some tea, chai, or coffee with these pieces.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:51:33 AM
Good morning, Christine. Yes, I had my first mug of chai.
TAndy 9:52:47 AM
Good morning Christine, Padma, MusicChallenged!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:52:50 AM
@Padma, however, my music acquisition has slowed down quite a bit over the past decade or so, so I do not have many recordings of the younger artists.
MusicChallenged 9:54:16 AM
@Padma - I agree with you and Dave's enviable collection. It may have slowed down @Dave, but you have a superb collection indeed.
MusicChallenged 9:55:04 AM
Good morning @Christine - yes first cup of Joe done, probably heading for the Chai next with all the spices and milk!!
PADMA GANESH 9:58:38 AM
@MC on “electronic effects” … T M Krishna has this article “In the quest for a perfect recording, a note of falsehood” - in other words - Do you want to know how sausage is made?
MusicChallenged 10:01:55 AM
@Padma - I think I have read that article (I will have to dig it up again to review). His article hit on the recording aspect (and the how sausage is made). I still remember a conversation with an artist after a live concert. The artist said they could fix a couple of lines if the recording was done on individual tracks... but the organizer did not have that.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:02:55 AM
Regarding the music collection, I fear that it does not have the same value anymore. Most of what I have in physical format can be downloaded from websites. So anyone can duplicate my collection. Plus orders of magnitude more.
MusicChallenged 10:04:56 AM
Yes Dave you are right about what is there to download, but quality is not good for many of them.
TAndy 10:08:04 AM
I agree. There is a case for rips of analog recordings since digital recordings are mastered differently. Typically they are recorded or made louder, and with more loudness comes more compression and loss of quality. VWestlife on YouTube has spoken about it in some of his videos, I think Techmoan as well.
Christine 🦉 10:11:03 AM
@Padma & @MusicChallenged, that sounds like a good plan. When I get home from these errands I plan to make some nice strong chai. And also, for intrinic and musical value, physical recordings > digital files, imo.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:12:00 AM
But the way most people listen to their music (via tiny cheap earbuds), maybe audio quality is not noticed or appreciated.
MusicChallenged 10:14:48 AM
I am sure there are people out there that have never heard analog music and it will probably sound strange when compared to the highly digitized and compressed music they are used to listening all their life. Not sure if I should say it is sad or this is life :-)
TAndy 10:15:48 AM
With Bluetooth audio, quality is pretty much an afterthought unfortunately. I can personally live with 128k music files, but I prefer Mp3 V0 or .ogg if ever possible. Most DJ mixes I have are potato quality unfortunately 😜
Sangeet Team (host) 10:16:36 AM
Maybe this is life. Similarly, analog music never can match the live concert experience.
Christine 🦉 10:18:58 AM
'Tis the way of the world presently.
PADMA GANESH 10:20:23 AM
@Dave I missed hearing the Raga of this GK violin piece when you may have announced it. What is it? Thanks
Sangeet Team (host) 10:21:19 AM
CD says Simhendramadhyamam.
PADMA GANESH 10:21:55 AM
@Dave, of course.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:26:18 AM
But I misannounced the accompanists and CD title!
MusicChallenged 10:39:23 AM
Loved that Channulal Mishra - he is so conversational as he is singing. I know MD Ramanathan did that a bi, Winder who else does this?
Sangeet Team (host) 10:42:24 AM
I have heard others do that in concert as well.
PADMA GANESH 10:43:05 AM
@Dave this piece by Chembai is a gem.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:43:53 AM
I'm glad you're enjoying it, Padma.
MusicChallenged 10:48:21 AM
My parents introduced me to Chembai and he is another I love.
MusicChallenged 11:15:29 AM
Nice selection Dave. You know there lived a composer TN Bala in Havertown, PA. He had interviewed TR Mali when he lived here in Chalfont,PA. One question he had asked him was "Who will be your troch bearer?". Mali refused to identify anyone on this question. Sadly TN Bala's website with all these interview passed along with him :-(
MusicChallenged 11:16:11 AM
Not many know, but TN Bala also had an Indian Classical Music show with ABC in the 1980's I think
Sangeet Team (host) 11:17:15 AM
I absolutely LOVED his radio show "Magazine India", "with your friend and host TN Bala."
Sangeet Team (host) 11:17:36 AM
The highlight of my week, I think it was on WRTI in Phila.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 11:18:06 AM
Good morning! Love Saturday mornings with Sangeet! BAM!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:18:14 AM
He organized a concert by a very young U. Srinivas, which I saw in the 80's.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:18:36 AM
Hey, Chef. Good to have you join us.
MusicChallenged 11:18:40 AM
Yes Dave - I only know about it as I arrived here in 1990
Sangeet Team (host) 11:19:13 AM
Back in the early 80's it was the ONLY Indian music on the radio.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:19:45 AM
And I was STARVING for Indian music.
MusicChallenged 11:23:13 AM
And Dave you took the steps to bring Sangeet to live in your starvation in 1986 - I know you are one of the "founding DJ's"
Sangeet Team (host) 11:25:21 AM
Not founding DJ. I was brought in as their first substitute DJ. Met them at a Hariprasad Chaurasia concert where the old SASA was selling records. Bought a pile of LPs, and chatted with them.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:27:17 AM
They had taken trips to NY, Lexington Ave., where Nagma House had imported HMV LPs. Once I figured that out, I went there directly with loads of cash.
MusicChallenged 11:28:21 AM
Oh - so who was there before you Dave? Are they still around?
Sangeet Team (host) 11:29:42 AM
They were graduate students that moved on. One, K. Balasubramaniam, had been living in NJ for a while, but I lost touch with him.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:33:01 AM
This all predates email and cellphone.
MusicChallenged 11:33:04 AM
Is this the guy? https://www.linkedin.com/in/kbalasubramanian
Sangeet Team (host) 11:34:02 AM
Hey! That's Bala! Good detective work!
MusicChallenged 11:38:09 AM
Thanks Dave. His linkedin account is Premium to connect with. It would be so nice to have an interview with him on Sangeet.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:39:31 AM
Good idea. He might recall the origins better than I.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:45:20 AM
And speaking of U. Srinivas, here he is now.
Christine 🦉 11:51:01 AM
It's great to learn some of these tidbits from the origins of Sangeet. I would love to hear more about how Sangeet was established at WPRB, the founders, the music scene etc. It seems that ever since I'be been a listener & supporter, there has always been Sangeet, but of course that's not the case.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:53:33 AM
The show started in 1986 I believe.
MusicChallenged 11:54:27 AM
@Christine - so agree with you. Feels like Sangeet has and is there always. Wonder if Sangeet can put a show with some of the other DJs of the past!!
Christine 🦉 11:55:28 AM
Comprehensive DJ station ID ✨ Thank you DTO & Sangeet team. Everybody take care & have a good weekend!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:55:59 AM
Thanks, Christine.
MusicChallenged 11:56:24 AM
All have a great weekend too and great show Dave as always
Sangeet Team (host) 11:56:58 AM
Rabindrasangeet, songs of Rabindranath Tagore, isn't strictly classical, but his melodies were always raga-based.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:57:30 AM
Thanks for joining the chat, MusicChallenged.
MusicChallenged 11:57:38 AM
Yes and it is nice to hear. I think Rungun played some on his show too
Sangeet Team (host) 11:59:55 AM
Thanks, everybody! Until next time!
