After basic training in veena from Sakharama Rao (goṭṭu vādyam player) of Tiruvidaimarudur, he became the first disciple of the Karaikudi brothers. In his peak years he was a leading exponent of the Kāraikuḍi veena style. He taught veena in some institutions in Chennai and Mumbai. His brother, Sundararaja Iyengar, was a performer of mridangam and kanjirā (a tambourine-type rhythm instrument, usually played along with the mridangam).
