One backstory on the hoagie / or hoggie, was that it was named after Hog Island. Area where Philly airport is now, used to be a shipyard. Lots of Italian laborers brought the great tradition of putting an entire meal of cold cuts, salad ingredients, cheeses all on a loaf of bread. Portable meal. Allegedly other workers wanted to try and or buy them...

Up in Maine some refer to that style of sandwich as "An Italian". Now that the styles, ingredients etc have been bastardized over the years, people have to order a "Turkey Italian" "Veggie Italian" etc. I asked if they actually have to say an "Italian Italian" for the real thing

There are some family run delis in Philly area that really don't care too much for orders that vary from the traditional Italian Hoagie.
