My week was okay! I didn't make my famous corned beef and cabbage this year...but it's a heavy lift what with the 48-hour brining - next year I think I will plan ahead!

I saw a milk snake here two summers ago. I was tickled pink!

@ Rob saw some Robins up in the Doylestown area, but no Red Wing Blackbirds yet..

Lots of Robins here in central Jerzie

I used to go on Nature Walks at Peace Valley Nature Center near Doylestown. The Naturalist there said that Red Winged Blackbirds are the true indicator of Spring as some Robins hang around sometimes during winter..

Milk snake is a nice sighting Addie! My brother found one in his bathroom towel closet last year!

Now THAT would be a surprise.

The Pennsylvania Railroad was once the largest company in the world. Source = PBS special that I watched years ago.

My cats are intrigued by the locomotives.

I worked for Conrail once, as a Clearance Engineer, then there was a big layoff at Pittsburgh South side, got laid off unfortunately.

I grew up next to the speed line in Collingswood. Have always loved train sounds! We have an Amtrak that goes through town at night here.

I live not too far from "Park Junction" in Fairmount section of Philly. One of my most memorable experiences was watching a "GP" locomotive coming out of an underground tunnel..The Ground SHOOK !!!

... it was hauling about 80 or so empty coal cars..

Where I grew up in Scranton, PA, the Erie-Lackawanna would take you to NYC...a great trip when we were kids!

@ Readie: My dad grew up in Scranton. When he was about 5 or so he got to know the nearby crossing gate guard, who put down the gate. Later that same man gave my Dad a lightly used bicycle for Christmas, my Dad's first Christmas present.

Come to think of it, I think I’ve almost always lived where I could hear a train.

There used to be a Steam Locomotive that tourists could take to New Hope PA, I took a ride on it once, Lots of Smoke and cinders.

Scranton has "Steamtown" - and a train museum- the locomotive still does excursions I think...I must do it sometime!

Black River and Western still has a bunch of rides they offer as well around Flemington, East Amwell, etc

It would be cool to get dressed up in my fringe jacket and high plains cowboy hat and take a ride on one of those old Steamers sometime..

New Hope - Ivyland Railroad is only on the PA side (no Lambertville). Goes from New Hope to you guessed it Ivyland. But they did not do the full jaunt that much in past years. Maybe they do the full ride for special occasions/rentals? They go from New Hope to Lahaska usually. I lived right next to those tracks at 2 different apartments for long time periods! Could not get away.

They did not always do the steam train, that was a treat once in a while thing.

I would see the train spotters out with cameras, video recorders and audio recording equipment when the old steam would ride by. Then they would pack up and ride to the next town and to it all over again. The train would "pose" and slow down for them. "Slow" is relative as that thing moves slow all the time heh

I wouldn't mind living in that area, @Brian - of course, lots of tourists...but a great area!

I find trainspotters so charming. I love how devoted they are!

I once dated someone Totally enamored of trains, and we took many trips by rail...very cool stuff!

Yeah I lived in Rushland a little spot on the map where time forgot. 90 degree bend in the road right at those tracks. About 12-13 years there. And then later in Furlong/Forest Grove area (near Pineville Tavern if you know that restaurant) for 8 years. That was out on a quiet road w horse farms and a kids day camp. Train right in the backyard.

Going into the other backyard, in Rushland, you climbed a small hill, walked down a short trail and then STOP you were at the edge of a huge stone quarry. Right at the height where the vultures were circling.

Yeah it was beautiful. Neshaminy Creek flowed right across the other side of the street in Rushland. Nice scenes down there too.

@ Brian: Pineville Tavern had an amateur night dinner I used to go to, friend of mine played Lead Guitar sometimes..

Furlong/Forest Grove residence was a great lonely road to walk down. Mill Creek (one of the many w/that name) on one side. Lots of wooded areas. Horse farms on the other. Saw all kinds of creatures.

Yep great food at Pineville! Small bar menu or the big menu sit down area too. Lots of Best Of's

Del Fest ( Del McCoury of bluegrass fame & his family) music festival in western Maryland on the West Virginia border is situated right next to RxR tracks. So many bands for 3- 4 days often playing songs about trains RIGHT when a train passes & blows its sounds. Fiddles and 3-4 pt harmony vocals imitating the sound of the train too... great place

i just picked up a copy of trainspotting film today & have never seen before. how good and / or depressing is it ?

...As energy costs continue to increase, I would expect the train infrastructure to be improved, for cost as well as environmental reasons... A Rebirth of Trains!

That would be wonderful, Alan! I like train travel a lot. I’d be into doing a lot more of it.

And increasingly turn the abandoned rail beds to hike/bike trails
