@Rob - short flight to Exuma in the Bahamas - Actually, I really wanted to take a direct flight to keep things simple, but you have to either fly from philly to Nassau and then take a short puddle-hopper plane from Nassau to Exuma...OR fly to Miami and take a bigger plane straight to Exuma. I opted for the latter option! The reviews of the puddle-jumper plane co were NOT good! loads of cancellations and apparently flies?

@Rob - yeah....Wanted to just get away briefly to an island that wasn't too long a flight away.

So Exuma has friendly wild pigs who swim at the beaches...which accounted for maybe 90% of my decision to choose that island.

@Lizbot, I don't blame you. Be careful of the wild pigs though

@Alan - yeah, not a big fan of the puddle-jumpers! Had to take one from Milwaukee to Madison once. Was surprised they didn't have a more substantial plane available!

@ROb - We kept looking for wild pigs in Maui to no avail. But yeah, I wouldn't want to come into close contact with one of those! The pigs in Exuma are spoiled and very used to humans!

I haven't been to Exuma before but my sister-in-law just did the same trip and loved the pigs

@Lizbot, a friend & I saw the Oscar-nominated animated shorts last Friday. Wow, what a mixed bag! Can we agree that one in particular is a shoe-in to win the Oscar? The fuzzy, family-friendly one.

@Richard - like many, my intro to Raymond Scott was through looney tunes that used Powerhouse and then I dug deeper and was amazed!

@Christine - Yeah, so first off, that was probably the darkest Oscar-nominated animated shorts program I can remember! By far! The cute bird/mouse family-friendly one was fine, and it'll probably win, but it wasn't my favortite, although I liked it just fine.

@Christine - One thing that was nice that I can't remember happening in MANY years is that there was NO Disney or Pixar short. Usually those win and it's just not a fair fight to pit those against tiny budget independent filmmakers! Those Pixar shorts are fine, but they win almost every time! So this time it's more of a fair fight...except that bird/mouse family-friendly is definitely a mainstream studio and biggest budget by far - I think it was amazon prime studios if I remember correctly!

@Christine - the only animated short I really didn't like was the last one in the program where it looks like the animator was VERY influenced by Richard Linklater's Waking Life and it felt a little derivative and sensational.

@Lizbot, it looks like Aardman studios will be winning another Oscar. And Windshield Wiper did seem like the animator used the same style. The effect is really arresting, but the story jumped all over the place, imo. Affairs of the Art was my favorite of the five.

@Christine - The shorts I'd like to win are either that funny but also very clever British “Affairs of the Art” one with Beryl and her psychotic sister who fits into L.A. culture a bit too well! OR Bestia, which was fascinating to watch, though disturbing as hell! Also liked “Boxballet," the Russian one, but maybe that won't win cuz...Russia

Everyone - the instrumental I used as bed music during my most recent mic break reminds me: See the movie "Strawberry Mansion" when it comes out! It's supposed to come to the Ritz in Philly in I think April. It's such an oddball movie but so good. Dan Deacon soundtrack really enhances it

and Dan Deacon just won an award for his soundtrack to what is supposed to be a visually stunning doc about China that I have yet to see called "Ascension". He won the Outstanding Original Score at the 2022 Cinema Eye Honors presented at the Museum of Moving Image in Queens just a couple weeks ago

@Roffle / Christine - Yeah, I saw it at Sundance a year ago and was wondering when it was coming out! It never streamed anywhere. I was losing hope it would every get distro, and then finally I saw an annoucement that it was getting a theatrical release! I love the name, although a movie with that name SHOULD by all rights be shot/set in Philly, not Baltimore!

This EP I'm currently playing is Philly saxophonist Kyle Press who made this during a period of isolation during the pandemic and I've been really digging it. First time playing it on WPRB

Baltimore and their funky tax breaks. Every corporations love nest.

baltimore gets a BAM from me. only been there a few times so far but seems very neato! recommend going to "sideshow", the gift shop/WOAH shop at the american visionary art museum. so much more than just a gift shop

Sad Baltimore story: Several years back I drove to Baltimore for an all-day public arts and music fest down by their (admittedly depressing) waterfront. I was looking forward to see Dan Deacon outdoors, and there were some sculptures and large-scale temporary art installations on display, plus a jazz group and some other bands. JUST Before the show was to start, the skies HEAVED and we and hundreds of other ppl made a dash for the nearby Shake Shack to get out of the downpour.

Sad Baltimore story, Part II: The whole festival had to be canceled and we shared a parking garage elevator with some VERY upset jazz musicians whose instruments got drenched, including an upright bass.

Also they just renovated/opened(?) a park on the waterfront and i was there right after it opened and it seemed quite lovely!

Sad Baltimore story, Part III: JUST BEFORE all that went down, we were leaving the parking garage by the waterfront and found you had to walk through a sad stained Hooters restaurant just to access the waterfront from the municipal garage. As we're crossing the concrete bridge from the garage to the Hooters, we see a guy flipping out at the car in front of him, stuck on a ramp below us in a line to get in the garage. He tries to pass that car and RAMS a cop car! ha

Happy Baltimore Story: My husband and a friend went to Bmore for High Zero years ago on a beautiful September day and were killing time between bands in a nearby park when I guy saunters up to them and yells "Watch out.....there's RETS!" (rats)
