Good Morning From Sangeet, on this Saturday morning, hosted today by Ramaprasad, aka, Ram
Andy Wing 9:07:34 AM
Morning! Is he playing through an amplifier?
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:08:50 AM
His mandolin is electric, so probably though an amplifier.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:11:30 AM
i read also that sometimes, probably in the beginning, he might have used an amplifier. Good Morning, Andy and the Obscure David
Sangeet Team (host) 9:13:00 AM
what is the difference between an electric mandolin and a the one where a pick up mike is attached and connected to an amplifier?
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:21:28 AM
Like an electric guitar, it is a solid body, so the string vibration is registered with 'pickups' rather than acoustically in a hollow body instrument. The signal is sent to the amplifier.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:22:14 AM
Without amplification, the solid body would sound dull and quiet.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:22:46 AM
Thanks, Dave
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:23:45 AM
If you find a good image of his mandolin, you can see the pickups under the strings.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:24:03 AM
Will do
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:28:31 AM
Where is Brian D. when you need an expert explanation?
Sangeet Team (host) 9:29:11 AM
Exactly.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:30:34 AM
Two songs after this i have a surprise. Hope Sangeet listeners out there like what I have done
Brian D 9:50:28 AM
Hello. Mando bat signal....
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:50:38 AM
Ha!
Brian D 9:51:27 AM
Oh. U Srinivas was in the beginning of the show. Dave, you have played that artist before correct?
Sangeet Team (host) 9:51:40 AM
Good Morning, Brian D
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:51:59 AM
Indeed I have played U. Srinivas. On The New Abnormal as well.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:54:50 AM
U. Srinivas was in the recent incarnation of Shakti with John McLaughlin.
Brian D 9:56:57 AM
Dave's explanation is great. The term "electric (insert guitar/mandolin etc)" usually means solid body instrument (or mostly solid) that requires an amplifier. One used to hear the term "acoustic-electric" to apply to acoustic hollow body instruments with built-in electronics/pickups to carry the sound out towards the amplifier. But that is not as commonly heard that I have found.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:58:56 AM
Thanks, Brian. That was very educational
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:59:17 AM
Brain D. is an educator after all.
Brian D 10:00:55 AM
Then there is the whole "pickup and internal microphone" hybrid world I have seen on acoustic guitars... so many possibilities. They have a pickup built in to carry the signal magnetically. AND they have a thin microphone inside the soundhole (usually) to carry the sound via that method. Two separate volumes and a blender slider lever to adjust how much mic versus pickup sound goes out to the amp. Fun!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:02:08 AM
Good use of technology
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:02:37 AM
What is this? Jazz? On Sangeet? Outrageous! :-)
Sangeet Team (host) 10:03:14 AM
You hear sitar - Indian!!
Brian D 10:03:29 AM
The only "pickup" I employ now is to pickup the acoustic guitar from the stand and play it in the living room. Ha. Living simply now. But yes I do love the technology as well. The greats know how to blend the old and new worlds. (<---former educator for a just few years actually. But those were great years!)
Sangeet Team (host) 10:04:32 AM
That was a good one, Brian
Brian D 10:05:00 AM
Oh this is Wynton I see. Very nice.
Brian D 10:11:16 AM
Oh the term "the greats" did not apply to myself there.... awkward wording. Was referring to the artists in the playlist etc. The pros
Brian D 10:13:19 AM
I would love to hear more of Sachal Jazz. Will search for more of them.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:14:40 AM
Brian, your humility is applauded. But you are great in out there and especially in Sangeet Space
Sangeet Team (host) 10:15:44 AM
Dave's program is a good place for that, my opinion
Brian D 10:15:58 AM
...we're living here in space...
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:18:31 AM
I don't know much about Sachal Jazz. I plan to play something by the Berklee Indian Ensemble jazz group this Friday.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:18:57 AM
Good
Sangeet Team (host) 10:20:02 AM
Have they harmoniously incorporated Indian ragas into their compositions?
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:24:41 AM
Yes. My selected performance is a cover of an L. Shankar composition set in Raga Bhimpalas.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:25:12 AM
Interesting
Sangeet Team (host) 10:28:31 AM
Bengali is another of the Indian languages that is well set suited for music, not just my opinion
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:29:42 AM
I am puzzled why even the Bengali Hindustani vocalists sing in Hindi.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:34:00 AM
They need bandishes. I have no knowledge how many are written in Bengali. Further is there a filial duty to the gharana? Experts should answer this good question
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:35:57 AM
I am way out of my depth with that topic.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:37:43 AM
Jayashri is the person to answer that question. Her music teacher is a Bengali
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:38:19 AM
Yes, Tripti Mukherjee.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:39:12 AM
We will ask her to find the answer for us
Brian D 10:44:48 AM
Bengali music has popped into the weekday playlists and chats lately I have seen.
Brian D 10:45:09 AM
Dave gets the Bengali Bat Signal and appears....
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:45:48 AM
Yes, that chat was all my doing. Rina slips some Bengali songs in sometimes.
PADMA GANESH 10:45:59 AM
Good morning all!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:46:23 AM
Good morning, Padma.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:47:22 AM
Hi Padma, Good Morning
Sangeet Team (host) 10:51:19 AM
@Padma, were you able to listen to the earlier pieces? Wanted to know your reaction to Semmangudi - MSS-Radha singing in a house concert
PADMA GANESH 10:52:23 AM
@Ram I missed it! I would have loved to hear it!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:53:06 AM
@Padma, will play another next time around
PADMA GANESH 10:54:19 AM
@Ram In my opinion, I have not heard much difference between Semmangudi and M S Subbalakshmi since she learnt from him. I was listening to a Khamboji Alapana by M S last night. I could have sworn it was identical to a Semmangudi Alapana
PADMA GANESH 10:57:44 AM
Veenai the ultimate chamber instrument of Carnatic music!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:59:04 AM
Veena, The Instrument
PADMA GANESH 10:59:38 AM
@Ram I do not know much about music at all. Just a listener.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:59:51 AM
@Padma, You are so right, the "gharana" trail. I am too small a guy in music to ask the question: Why did she later not etch out her own individual style within the bani of "Semmangudi" school?
Sangeet Team (host) 11:01:10 AM
@Padma, you are kidding, of course. We are all students and the journey is never ending. There in is the joy of music
PADMA GANESH 11:03:36 AM
@Ram , I have heard that M S would remark that too much swara singing would ruin vocal cords. In my opinion, she allowed herself the only deviation from Semmangudi by limiting swaraprastharas and sticking to Neraval of which she was the Queen. Semmangudi would usually light up his concerts with fireworks of sparkling swaraprastharas.
PADMA GANESH 11:04:12 AM
@Ram you are too kind!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:04:16 AM
@Padma, there is so much physics in music - frequency, overtones, harmony......
PADMA GANESH 11:05:24 AM
@Ram yes physicist Sir C. V. Raman published at least two research papers on the harmonic frequencies of Mridangam
Sangeet Team (host) 11:08:18 AM
@Padma, in a public forum, I can only ask: Did MSS enjoy the freedom one needs to evolve into different musical forays? I am not a scholar
PADMA GANESH 11:10:49 AM
@Ram experimentation or not she was still fine musician. Some of her concerts from the sixties will bear it out.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:11:37 AM
Such bhakti bhava in music is unparalleled
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:38:12 AM
I always enjoy hearing the rare Jalatarang.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:41:51 AM
Yes, David, great instrument. As a kid growing up in India, I have been to concerts where this instrument was featured as an accompaniment. But as an adult and hopefully more educated, I have hardly heard any. why can't they have a full fledged concert? The organizers are too shy. Afraid of the collection?
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:44:24 AM
That, and there may not be many performers on Jalatarang anymore. Last Jalatarag concert I saw was in the late 80's. Not many recordings available either.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:45:30 AM
If there are no concert opportunities, not many will learn the instrument. Typical Catch 22!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:46:47 AM
And all the splashing can damage a wood stage. 😉
Sangeet Team (host) 11:47:15 AM
LOL
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:47:48 AM
Front three rows have to wear rain gear.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:49:44 AM
It is not that bad!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:52:04 AM
It's brutal. Ceramic chips flying in all directions.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:54:49 AM
imagine it gets into the hands of the audience. worse than pie throwing
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:54:51 AM
🍵💥🥢 ☔
Sangeet Team (host) 11:58:14 AM
This might interest Padma. I read once a humorous essay on how to write a paper for publication. The writer suggested introducing a greek Pi into an equation. Will give the referee a headache to figure that out. He called it 'Pi throwing'
Sangeet Team (host) 12:00:10 PM
Thank you all, Andy, David, Brian and Padma, for dropping in and enhance the dialogue here. Thanks also to all those Sangeet listeners out there for tuning in to Sangeet. Have a great week
