Freak Out! Is my favorite Zappa. Monster guitarist, composer, at times.
Brian D 8:05:26 AM
I try to listen to all Zappa that i can ha . Love his humor. Wish he was still around to enjoy the tech of today. And give some commentary
dan Cochrane 8:06:37 AM
That’s a good tip! Live Bongo Fury is terrific, beginning to end. First time ever hearing “stunt” in front of guitarist. Please don’t tell me Hendrix was one.
dan Cochrane 8:09:26 AM
Doc on Zappa drove home what a cheap skate he was to band members. Jerked them around other ways. A cliche “genius” or not. I much prefer Beefheart overall, great painter too. Zappa did produce the masterpiece, Trout Mask Replica. Great collaboration.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:10:32 AM
I heard Beefheaert wasn't very nice to his bandmates either.
dan Cochrane 8:12:45 AM
So, host with the most? Zappa with lyrics is a majority or nearly, of his output. That say’s a lot right there. Zappa repetition of musical passages, trademark yes, but predictable too.
dan Cochrane 8:13:44 AM
Never heard, read that, doc, etc.
Blue Rondo à la Mok 8:13:58 AM
Caravanserai
dan Cochrane 8:14:50 AM

TAndrew 8:18:04 AM

dan Cochrane 8:18:12 AM
That might be my favorite Santana album. A real departure at the time. Does anyone else think Stevie Ray Vaughn is over rated? But technically a Hendrix mimic, which does require talent.
Christine 🦉 8:19:11 AM

I saw Albert ‘Icepicker” Collins open for SRV at Aragon, Chicago. SRV was hiding behind monitor watching AC, like a little kid worshipping his hero. What a moment there. Jimmy Vaughn is no slouch either, like the Winter brothers. Must be in the water there.
dan Cochrane 8:25:21 AM
With Crumb, same director, perfect double feature. Art School Confidential isn’t quite up to those two.

Blue Oyster Cult and many others have used the term stunt guitar. Not rhythm not lead but effects, cartoon like explosions, sirens, gun fire, howling wind etc...
dan Cochrane 8:30:20 AM
Oh, ok! Makes sense. Zappa owned a Hendrix burned up Strat. He’s holding it on Guitar magazine cover. Gorgeous “distressed” instrument. Now done by guitar companies. Thanks Jimi!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:31:33 AM

Hedges, sure. The guitarist from another planet.
dan Cochrane 8:32:33 AM
Pete Townsend, rich man posing. He’ll Clash too.
Brian D 8:33:29 AM
Yeah Dave, Beefheart, love him too, basically starved and mentally and emotionally tortured his band members. Don ate well. But had his own mental demons it seems. I go back and read the Beefheart and Zappa bios often. Great to revisit
dan Cochrane 8:34:35 AM
Last time I saw Hedges it was embarrassing. On big bouncing work out ball, feather, Mike in derby, played lame ass keyboard, flute. See folks, my minors at music school. What a cosmic muffin. Died too soon for sure.

Dean Wareham of Luna and Galaxie 500 tells a cool story about recording a Luna lp in his bio. Studio person said go to Toys r Us and buy a bunch of toy instruments. They used them on some tracks. Think it was Pup Tent lp and Pachyderm studios in Minn
dan Cochrane 8:56:45 AM
Fun show? Truly ridiculous. Segovia. Nothing further your honor.
dan Cochrane 8:57:36 AM
Story better than the music. Wanna bet Brian?
dan Cochrane 8:59:01 AM
The Monkees of all people really put a nail in the coffin on stage, with fake snakes, destroying instruments.
Brian D 8:59:24 AM
Keith wanted to get the organ notes to sustain and feed back. He freed up his hands by stabbing knives in between the keys and they kept ringing the notes . Cool trick. And it freed him up to ride it like a horse etc. Good laugh.
dan Cochrane 8:59:42 AM
“Shut up and play” applies here.
dan Cochrane 9:00:14 AM
More bullshit. IMHO
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:00:21 AM
dan, that should be the title of my show.
dan Cochrane 9:00:48 AM
More bullshit? Just kidding.

You might have noticed most of The New Abnormal has no lyrics.
Brian D 9:01:14 AM
I love the music and the story. ELP. and others. Stories, great stage shows, studio lps, great memories. Love it

dan Cochrane 9:03:36 AM
ELP did what 77% classical covers. Blood Sweat and Tears did way more.
Blue Rondo à la Mok 9:05:18 AM
Child is the Father of Man 👍
dan Cochrane 9:05:20 AM
Let’s get back to Michael Hedges, huge % of covers, pop and classical (live).
Blue Rondo à la Mok 9:05:32 AM

Blue Rondo à la Mok 9:05:43 AM

dan Cochrane 9:06:05 AM
Sounds like Oregon.

I've got some Hedges material. I'll try to get some in the mix in future shows.
Andy Wing 9:06:44 AM
We used to watch Don Kirschner. I remember Queen's early appearance on the show. It was on weekend afternoons before pro wrestling as I recall.
George Korein 9:06:53 AM
