@Rungun any idea when was this TNS piece recorded? The voice sounds more like his son’s

Someone shared the work of a retired person from Kerala in Whatsapp and he had translated many many compositions - I used this to search for many pieces for todays show.

@Rungun Great alapana by the great MS. Thanks for playing TWO great pieces in beautiful Tamil.

My pleasure @Padma. I can relate very closely with some of the Tamil compositions ( my mother tongue is Tamil)

@Rungun based on the piece we are hearing now , it is worth repeating often MS was not just a singer; she was a first rate musician. These days “singers” are often over-praised

@Padma - so agree with you and she had great humility. When you read about how much she worked on getting her sruti or how she worked on pronunciation before recording - amazing dedication. I have heard that she personally saw to it that her accompanying artists had their meals before she ate... Great Soul

@Rungun what ragam is Ramakrishna Murthy singing? If I am not mistaken, I have heard this piece sung in another raga by the great K V Narayanaswami

@Padma - it is Dwijawanthi (same as Akhilandeshwari (which is coming up at the end of the show.

I think it is a more popular dance piece because of the meaning - has room for a lot of abhinaya...

Narendra Datar and Pournima Dhumale are both representing the Agra gharana.

Agra gharana still has strong elements of dhrupad.

Thanks Dave for that information. I was not able to find a lot of information about Pournima Dhumale

She learnt from her mother Dr. Sulabha Thakar, and from Babanrao Haldankar. She has learnt many rare ragas.

Two more pieces after this - After the Bansuri - you can hear the carnatic flute called Pulangoil (in Tamil)

I believe the flute recording is from a 1988 CD on SonoDisc "La Flute De Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia".

The flute was amazing of course. But the tabla earned the applause too. Was it Zaire Husain?

Yeah, that was 15 minutes versus 22, so probably from Basant Bahar.
