The Shehnai is so wonderful - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shehnai
Sangeet Team (host) 9:11:42 AM
@AndrewT - welcome and stay as long as you can. Safe drive if you are heading home now
PADMA GANESH 9:11:58 AM
Khan Saheb - he of the faultless pitch. I heard him live nearly thirty four years ago. Still ringing in my ears.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:12:34 AM
@Padma - how I wish I had heard and seen him in person.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:13:52 AM

Yes, Bismillah Khan was peerless. And so humble a presence on stage.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:16:15 AM
@Dave - based on your comment I presume you have seen him on stage.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:16:46 AM
Several times, yes.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:18:01 AM
Sad for me - I have never seen or heard Khan Saheb in person, only some media (cassettee, CD or digital)
Sangeet Team (host) 9:19:10 AM
Viribhoni is one of the early kriti's many students of Indian Classical Music learn - Bhairavi is a tough ragam for listeners...
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:19:12 AM
Tried to see Bismillah Khan perform with L. Subramaniam in Manhattan, but Subramaniam phoned in sick. Hariprasad Chaurasia graciously offered to fill in, but their srutis didn't match - so no jugalbandi.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:22:11 AM
@Dave - that must have been a disappointment. Wonder if there has been a flute and shehnai juglabandhi...
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:23:38 AM
Some videos are on YouTube.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:25:21 AM
@Dave - I was doing the same thing and came across one that seems to be nice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNcD1Ii3pDY
PADMA GANESH 9:30:06 AM
@Rungun thank you for playing the majestic “Viribhoni”. Majestic ragam, majestic composition;
PADMA GANESH 9:33:38 AM
@Dave I heard Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma (Santorum) and L. Subramaniam play right after each other in Manhattan. (1997 I think). No jugalbandi. Now I realize why. Scrutiny mismatch?
PADMA GANESH 9:33:49 AM
*Santoor
PADMA GANESH 9:34:22 AM
*Sruti ——autocorrect uggh!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:35:57 AM
Not sure. Violin is adjustable, and should be able to match srutis. But bansuri and shehnai are fixed.
PADMA GANESH 9:36:19 AM
@Dave, thanks
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:37:05 AM
Maybe they hadn't had an opportunity to collaborate earlier, and felt unprepared for a jugalbandi? Guessing.
MusicChallenged 9:37:38 AM
Violin is adjustable but within a limited range. Flute and Shehnai are fixed, but flute players have a number of flutes to help with that..
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:40:30 AM
And years ago, especially before the electronic tambouras, Indian music generally had no fixed pitch. Harmoniums kind of forced conformity to a fixed pitch.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 9:44:12 AM
The "Sa" could be wherever the vocalist felt most comfortable.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:45:46 AM
@Dave - before the electronic gadgets - they used a sruti box or another stringed instrument for sruti
Christine 🦉 9:49:33 AM

Corage Mike 11:08:31 AM
Good day. Sangeet team.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:08:53 AM
@Corage - Good day to you too. Welcome to Sangeet
Sangeet Team (host) 11:26:40 AM
This song is so much more enjoyable when you get the meaning of the song - and it is even more "deeper" if you understood Tamil in which the song is written
Sangeet Team (host) 11:31:40 AM
yArukkAgilum bhayamA - bEgaDA - miSracApu Composer: Madhurakavi Bharati This is a padam where the nAyikA (a young woman) has been solicited by the king of the land, Lingadurai, for a dalliance, and she is wearing it like a medal for all to see. She says she's neither afraid nor ashamed, and that it is no one else's business but her's.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:34:47 AM
Is that NayikA or Nikki Minaj lyrics?
Sangeet Team (host) 11:38:12 AM
@Dave LOL!! It is transcription that is used to write Indian language in English script...
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:39:00 AM
No, my point is the lyrics sound bold, like a modern rap song.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:39:26 AM
She owns it.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:39:57 AM
Not that bold I guess
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 11:40:56 AM
Or is this sung from the townspeople's perspective, as a cautionary tale?
Sangeet Team (host) 11:45:45 AM
You could say it is from teh Towns people. Essentially it is a mistress of the king who is speaking out. Basically the women says - why should I fear, I have not done anything wrong, I found a man. She continues to ask why should hide on come from a side door, I did nothing wrong and so I will come using the main entrance to the palace and so on
Sangeet Team (host) 11:50:15 AM
