60 // an introduction to onkyo (& some lowercase)
Tonight’s edition of CLOWNTRONICS asks you to consider what makes up the very bare essence of sound: when you really strip it down to its most minimal elements, what do you hear? This is the question that guides the experimentations of Japan’s onkyo-kei scene (derived from 音響系, or “reverberation of sound”). Emerging in Tokyo in the late 1990s and continuing on into the present, the musicians behind this movement developed and explored an interest in the texture (rather than melodic/musical structure) of sound through slow, meditative improvisation, quiet minimalism, and sometimes just plain silence. This introduction to the genre will feature some early classics and underappreciated later works by pioneers of the movement like Sachiko M, Otomo Yoshihide, and Taku Sugimoto; various side projects and collaborations between themselves and other musicians joining from outside of the scene; later contributions from newer domestic and foreign names; and occasional dips here and there into some works that came out of onkyo-kei’s Western counterpart, lowercase.

| Toshiya Tsunoda Solid Vibration Of A Support Pillar For The External Unit For A Large Size Refrigerator Extract From Field Recording Archive #1 WrK 1997 From liner notes: "The external unit of a large size refrigerator which makes ice for preserving marine products, was being supported by a concrete pillar. The sound of the vibrations of the unit's motor is something that we often hear as an air vibration, but in this case, due to the structure of the support pillar, what was observed was a solid vibration stationary wave which had 5-10 overtone frequencies." |
