Brian (host) 10:05:28 AM
A cheery and dry morning to all of you out there!
Readie Righteous 10:33:27 AM
HI Brian- Thanks for the shout-out! I was drawn to your show by the fusion discussion!
Brian (host) 10:34:01 AM
Hi Read, nice to see you here! Yes, I wanted to come tell you in your chat but I didn't get home in time.
Brian (host) 10:34:14 AM
It's not quite PPPL's flavor of fusion but we are absolutely involved!
Readie Righteous 10:35:26 AM
Yes, I was thinking neutral beams and High harmonic fast waves (radio frequency) as I listened!
dan Cochrane 10:35:47 AM
Two posts?!? I rest my case your honor. Now I know what the worst scheduled program on WPRB is. If there’s a best, there must be a worst. Carry on, all 3 of you.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:36:04 AM
Good morning, Brian! Thanks for the Lawrence Livermore Lab laser-oriented fusion progress report. An old friend was a plasma containment specialist with Princeton Plasma Physics Lab's tokamak experiments, and he often wryly cited the "trying to evenly compress a balloon" challenge of plasma containment.
dan Cochrane 10:36:54 AM
Livermore Lab tests, develops WMD.
dan Cochrane 10:37:20 AM
Just saying.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:37:37 AM
@Readie Righteous Congrats on Brian's shoutout for your superb show yesterday. Totally well deserved!
Readie Righteous 10:37:37 AM
Hi Richard! I feel "at home at work" with the PPPL discussion! Fusion is exciting!
Brian (host) 10:38:37 AM
@Dan You're absolutely right, though it doesn't sound like you're into the science breaks I can spend some time on this next.
dan Cochrane 10:39:54 AM
Thank you, I love science. NPR’s Science Friday as one example.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:39:58 AM
@Readie Righteous It surely is - and we're only 20 years away from the crucial breakeven energy used = energy produced point !!! Indeed, we've been only 20 years away for the last 60 years !!! (Sorry, I am a booster of fusion energy research, but I just couldn't resist ...)
Readie Righteous 10:42:31 AM
Thanks @Richard! I am privileged to be part of the fusion family hard at work at PPPL. My favorite job so far, and I've had a lot of jobs throughout my working life.
Brian (host) 10:42:43 AM
@Dan I welcome any and all feedback, this is no Science Friday by a longshot but I'd always like to be more entertaining and educational. Getting ideas to stick with audio alone is difficult.
dan Cochrane 10:44:39 AM
Here’s some science. I substituted first day of school, special Ed. on Tues. HS. Only one returning student could fit in their desk seat. So, they blew up big rubber ball rolling chairs, that roll up to the opposite side of the desk. Up front, the teach has piles of candy, other treats for assignment rewards. Reminded me of the passengers on the mega ship in Wall-E. To be truthful, I’m obese also, but I’m inspired to do much, much better.
dan Cochrane 10:50:20 AM
Thanks again, I’ll check out that book. Also, the late Peter Bacon Hales, “Outside The Gates of Eden- The Dream Of America from Hiroshima to Now”, University of Chicago Press, 2014.
dan Cochrane 10:53:02 AM
The obvious theme: Music that includes an explosion sound affect. Moody Blues alone probably has a dozen tracks.
Readie Righteous 10:53:44 AM
@Brian thanks for your candor. I concur on the Hiroshima book!
dan Cochrane 10:54:09 AM
Back at ya!
Brian (host) 10:57:28 AM
Thanks Dan and Readie! WPRB is freeform radio and using it to communicate rarely heard facts is why I am on the air. Thanks for suggesting this important direction today
Readie Righteous 10:57:53 AM
The Flaming Lips album "The Soft Bulletin is a concept album that has been attributed by some as relating the the development of the fission bomb (Manhattan Project) - have you heard it?
Brian (host) 10:58:49 AM
I'm a big fan! But I had no idea it was inspired that way. I'll have to listen to it with that in mind
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:59:53 AM
@ Brian Well said, fair, balanced and candid, with support of scientific research but also awareness of the frequent military overlays, and with compassion for humanity.
Readie Righteous 11:01:11 AM
I highly recommend it! I played a track on my Aug. 6 "Blossoms among the Ruins" program.
Brian (host) 11:02:46 AM
@Richard, I'm glad it came off that way. The first intention normally in communicating science news is to make things seem exciting and important - which they often are! But that perspective makes it hard to talk through nuance. I guess if it's going to happen anywhere on FM radio, it will probably be here.
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:05:41 AM
Yes, indeed. :-))
dan Cochrane 11:12:00 AM
Fascinating! A very long time ago Scientific American devoted an issue to concrete, and one idea that knocked me out: That concrete bends also.
Brian (host) 11:16:35 AM
That is absolutely true! No material is really that stable if you zoom in enough. Everything is flowing, reassembling over time. (Especially if it's placed somewhere on this flowing, dynamic Earth!)
Readie Righteous 11:17:56 AM
cool stuff, Brian! Also, the Tuzeint track is perfect vibe for a rainy Sunday
Brian (host) 11:18:40 AM
That's right.. something to get you in the mood for relaxing inside. Read, did your bird ever come back?
Readie Righteous 11:21:43 AM
Hey, not yet- the Birdie has not made an appearance Saturday or as of yet today... I am keeping vigilant!!!
Readie Righteous 11:22:10 AM
Determined to get a photo!
Brian (host) 11:22:33 AM
The patient worm gets the bird!
Readie Righteous 11:23:45 AM
Indeed @Brian!
Readie Righteous 11:37:10 AM
Cool pic of the h. crab brain. We're fortunate in New Jersey to be lose enough to the shore to be able to see the current version of these amazing creatures!
Readie Righteous 11:37:25 AM
*Close enough*
Brian (host) 11:38:12 AM
That's right! Once Deidre Dionysiac told me about going to count how many horseshoe crabs were mating during a certain full moon.
Brian (host) 11:38:18 AM
Apparently it was a lot!
Readie Righteous 11:39:26 AM
Well today is the full moon (Blue Moon) and they have blue blood, apparently!
Brian (host) 11:40:00 AM
Horseshoe crabs are much more interesting than most of us probably consider!
Readie Righteous 11:40:35 AM
There is a medical connection I saw on Google just now
Brian (host) 11:53:24 AM
I'm curious what you found Read!
Readie Righteous 11:54:57 AM
Yeah, the amebocytes in their blue blood is harvested to keep our blood safe from pathogens, something like that! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_crab
Readie Righteous 11:55:58 AM
And after harvesting a little of their the blood, they are released unharmed back into the sea! How cool is that!
Brian (host) 11:57:01 AM
It's like a vampire factory! Get on the conveyor belt, Horseshoe Crab!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:57:03 AM
I went one year to observe the horseshoe crab egg-laying orgy (well, it is ...) at Cape May. Wondrous, astonishing! Not the least of which being, these creatures are not crabs but arthropods more closely related to scorpions and spiders, and virtually unchanged for 400 million years. Maybe we Homo sapiens should have their brains, and we'll survive nearly as long! ;-))
Brian (host) 11:57:30 AM
That is amazing Richard! I would love to see it. It sounds like one of NJ's natural wonders
Readie Righteous 11:58:31 AM
Between the hydra and horsehoe crab, we could find the fountain of youth!
Brian (host) 11:58:52 AM
Trust me, the billionaires are on it! I bet it's no trouble getting funding for Hydra research
Readie Righteous 11:59:24 AM
Awesome, @Brian!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:59:42 AM
It is indeed! And, if I recall correctly, scientists were not really aware of it until the 20th century. Although of course the locals knew. As did many bird watchers because migratory birds gather to feed on the horseshoe crab eggs (don't worry, plenty survive!)
Brian (host) 12:00:19 PM
We are slow to catch on but there are more and more of us, so eventually scientists will probably get to investigating everything.
Brian (host) 12:00:31 PM
It's been great hanging out with you all this morning - see you next Sunday!
Readie Righteous 12:01:10 PM
Thanks Brian, and bye to Richard and Dan!
Readie Righteous 12:01:19 PM
Have a great week!
Brian (host) 12:01:37 PM
You too Read!
