Good morning world and worldly inhabitants! What would you like to learn about today?
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:28:24 AM
Good morning, Brian! Either today ... or at a future time ... I've read that climate change is slowing and/or altering the courses of certain major ocean currents -- including (I believe) the Gulf Stream, which brings warm waters to .the British Isles, moderating their climates. Is this true and what's the "why/how" of its happening?
Brian (host) 10:29:35 AM
Great suggestion, Richard! Let's see what can be dug up.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:44:37 AM
I can totally confirm the core conclusions of that scientific study on squirrels' learning processes as they jump from branch to branch. I've had backyard and, currently, back deck bird feeders. And it's been a constant battle of wits for me to design squirrel-proof -- or even just squirrel resistant -- bird feeders.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 10:44:54 AM
And those squirrels are clever. We tried our best to keep a bird feeder out of their reach. But they navigated from a garbage can to a screen to the top of the window frame where they jumped from window to window across the back of the house to reach the seed.
Brian (host) 10:45:45 AM
That is absolutely true! They can be menaces to birdfeeders. Where I currently live the squirrels have not discovered the feeder, which I attribute to luck alone. Eventually they'll catch on.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:47:00 AM
The squirrels are obviously very intelligent, true problem solvers who learn from and build on recent past experiences. Plus they seem to have evolved or are evolving true hands with juxtaposed thumbs, making them manually most formidable. jmbss
Brian (host) 10:48:12 AM
Evolution in progress! It's an arms race!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:49:30 AM
Ha! Good one Brian! It certainly is an arms -- and also hands LOL -- race. I can design a bird feeder system that will defeat any squirrel ... for about, um, 36 hours! ;-)) After that, I look out and see that they've figured a way to hang on to the feeder and chow down.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:51:49 AM
Actually, my current bird feeder, a combination of a slippery half-dome plastic covering and a spring-loaded feeder whose seed dispensing holes close up when anything heavier than a blue jay lands on it. Still, I must remain vigilant ...
Brian (host) 11:05:53 AM
That design sounds beyond ingenious. One advantage we have over squirrels is the combined intelligence of our connected human brain economy - ie., we can buy other people's inventions to keep our birdfeeders secure
Corage Mike 11:18:03 AM
Great show again.when we first started listening to your show earlier this season, I would say stop talking and play some tunes🎶. But the show is a great blend.
Brian (host) 11:25:01 AM
Woo thanks for the comment Mike! I know it's a different flavor of radio compared to "normal" WPRB but I hope it appeals to some of you out there.
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:50:05 AM
Great show, Brian, enjoyed the music and also learned lots! I'll be emailing you off-list a future show topic suggestion. All best!
Brian (host) 11:56:28 AM
Thank you Richard, glad you could tune in!
Brian (host) 12:02:07 PM
Thanks all, nice to be with you this morning!
