i can imagine that is true about canada as well! especially montreal, vancouver, and toronto

yess and i think he also remarked on the same `silver lining' in terms of DIY culture in the US

although i think it's a shame it's unsupported

for sure it is absolutely a shame. same goes with independent filmmaking + multimedia art in general!

i think the lack of infrastructure creates the possibility for a lot worse personality cults to form in scenes though

so interesting - recording via mono cassette machines and transferring to digital/working with digital. so much trial and error within the process but so cool

yess it's a really cool process

yesss especially remarkably interesting how it deviates from editing the track digitally, adjusting EQs for instance, or adding a filter. love it all

ive been wanting to do something similar with lo-fi digital equipment - it's so interesting hearing his process

i feel similarly! especially to use as much hardware as possible and hopefully one day get a cassette recorder / to capture how the recording is meant to be

also there’s definitely an intersection between the instrumental arrangements of neo soul / soul records and everything played on today’s episode

i think i respond more to tone and rhythm than content in writing

i feel that way about rhythm in writing especially!

it was so fascinating what was said about something that is destructible surviving that destruction - it all relates back to what’s preserved from the mono cassette recordings in terms of the balance between instrumentation and vocals . oh and also what is ultimately kept in the songwriting process

when i was writing music i would constantly use things like flat 9ths too

also speaking of classically dissonant chords. that reminded me of arthur lourie especially with the flat 9ths

& so much of his compositions

what i found fascinating was that everything becomes comprehensible regardless of how chromatic you make it

jandek kinda does that too

and the result is the harmony actually sounds really refreshing

it almost seems like we naturally try to make sense of what we hear

absolutely, no matter how chromatic, dissonant, etc. it is - what’s challenging to against convention really does become comprehensible

have not listened to enough jandek but im curious to hear more / catch up on jandek’s discography
