Spotlight: Shostakovich, Symphony No. 10 in E Minor
Today we'll be playing a variety of music, but the spotlight of the show will be an explanation and discussion of Shostakovich's 10th Symphony in E Minor. Known for its "Stalin Scherzo," this is arguably Shostakovich's greatest symphony and is a great example of his masterful use of thematic interrelation in his symphonies.
Today, we'll be traveling through a thousand years of musical history, beginning with with medieval Gregorian Chant all the way up to the minimalism of Philip Glass. Blink and you'll miss one of the great turning points in the history of music!
Today, we'll be deep diving into what makes classical music worth listening to: in my opinion, this is the variation in form and ensemble which allows it to deliver very specific emotional impact. By focusing on Beethoven's music, we'll compare and contrast different forms and think about what their purposes may be.
It's the WPRB spring drive!!! Which means that I will be playing some of the top hits from my show over the past few months, plus a few extra pieces added in here and there.
